STEM Challenge Tower Building

The children worked in groups to complete a STEM challenge of building a tower out of just spaghetti and tape that would be capable of supporting a large marshmallow. They thoroughly enjoyed it and worked very well together designing their towers.

Pumpkin Carving

The children worked in groups to gut out and carve pumpkins in groups in the lead up to Halloween. Even though the classroom was left in a mess, lots of fun was had!

Project Work:

Over the course of October, the children created 3D models of real-life buildings or creations from their own imagination as part of a STEM project at home. They completed some fantastic pieces of work which are displayed proudly outside our classroom for all to see.

Science Week:

During science week we completed various experiments such as the floating/sinking of peeled and unpeeled oranges, popping a balloon with an orange peel, inflating a balloon using vinegar and baking soda, how soap makes pepper disperse, osmosis with coloured water transferring from one glass to another, how water makes the colours of skittles spread out and finally making oobleck! It was fair to say it got a bit messy in the classroom but a lot of fun was had!

Science Projects:

To link in with science week, the children completed science projects over the month of November, picking science ideas/experiments to present on. They completed some brilliant pieces of work on a variety of different topics.

In November we remember:

November is a month in which we remember those who have passed away and the robin bird is a nice symbol which represents this. We created some lovely pieces of robin artwork which were up on display throughout the month.

Winter Art:

The children have created some lovely pieces of winter art in the lead up to Christmas. We looked at using oil and chalk pastels for some of our art pieces and they turned out really well!

Christmas Cards Appeal:

In the lead up to Christmas it is important to think of others, especially those who may feel lonely and may need something to brighten up their day. We decided to create Christmas cards for the local nursing home in Athboy and delivered these cards along with some chocolates as a gift. It's important to remember to always be kind.

Our Christmas Play:

Our Christmas play took place on December 18th and it was a fantastic success. We had a busy few weeks with auditions to pick the roles, creating props, practicing in the classroom and in the hall, it was hectic! It all worked out on the day and the children from both of our 6th classes put in a fantastic display which will be fondly remembered by all involved.

Chinese New Year:

To celebrate and recognise the Chinese New Year, we decorated posters displaying the sign for the year (the Horse) and Chinese characters which showcased how to say Happy New Year in Chinese!

Confirmation:

It was a busy few weeks leading up to the Confirmation, choosing names, sponsors, completing Confirmation projects and artwork, along with several practices in the classroom and in the Church. Throughout the year we have been reading the prayers of the faithful at the weekend masses in Athboy, as well as attending mass every Friday morning as a class.

We then celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation with Fr Padraig and Bishop Tom Deenihan on Friday the 27th of February. It was a lovely ceremony and thankfully there was a bit of sunshine on the day for the boys and girls and their families.
